A Fresh Start

Hi everyone and welcome to our blog! Just to give you some information on who we are and what this blog is about.

My name is Karl. I have a fiancee called Aliz and we have 2 beautiful little girls called Layla and Deliah. I am British born and raised and Aliz is Hungarian. We have been together for nearly 5 years and have already accomplished so much together. Our biggest challenge was moving to Hungary amid the global Covid-19 outbreak.

Aliz already owned a property in Hungary so we decided to pack up as much as we possibly could and just leave! Driving there would take 18.5 hours, a long drive but having done it once before I was ready for it.
At the end of March 2020 we hit the road at about 20:00 for our eurotunnel train at 01.15 from Folkestone to Calais. The last time we drove to Hungary was to visit Aliz’s family about 3 years ago and crossed the channel by ferry which took about 2 hours. This was the first time we had travelled using eurotunnel and with a 35 min journey time it was alot easier especially with 2 young children this time. Our first daughter Layla was just 4 weeks old last time, now she is 2 and Deliah was 9 months.
The Covid-19 out break was in its infancy at this time with alot of uncertainty about what was going to happen. We knew that the sooner we went the better as it was predicted that countries boarders would close and such. We made it through France, Belgium, Germany and Austria without incident and had a great drive the whole way it was only when we reached the Hungarian boarder at roughly 1800 is when things got alittle tricky.

We where placed in a holding bay with every other European traveller trying to get through the Hungarian boarder. Alot of the others were Romainian just passing. It wasnt until 2100 when the boarder opened and still had a long wait as everyone queued to get through. As we got to passport control they were only allowing Hungarian nationals through and didnt know what to do with us as 3 of us had British passports. As we were a family we were allowed in the country as long as we went into quarantine at home for 2 weeks.

2 weeks isolation wasnt so bad really. To be honest it was nice to have a break from working 12 hours sometimes 15 hours a day back in the UK plus we could speak alot of time as a family. Every morning the police would come to check on us making sure we were ok and that we were staying indoors. They even bought things up from my car such as nappies which was nice of them.
After the 2 weeks were over there were now restrictions due to the Covid-19 outbreak on what people could do. Such as social distancing (1.5m apart from other people) and the shops were only open for limited hours, Over 65’s were only allowed to shop between 9-12 and everyone else outside of these times. Even children were not allowed to go inside side the shops so shopping was a challenge.
Aliz worked as a nurse back in the UK and soon found a job here in Hungary. I am now a stay at home daddy for the time being looking after our girls.

We have many dreams and plans for our future here in Hungary so watch this space…
